It didn’t take long for me to take note of the artists that influence St Anthony Mann and his beautiful ambient folk music. He very much resides in the same vein as Bon Iver and Dustin Tebutt with his beautifully spaced vocals that have an ambient and intimate feel.
The song feels like a personal conversation with a long time friend on a summer evening around a campfire. The song just has this warm feel that could only be described as a heartfelt hug.
I do love how relaxed the song feels whilst also being a complete and well crafted piece of work, this is by no means an easy feat and I know exactly how much effort you have to put in to make something sound so effortless. The song progresses brilliantly as well, both rising and falling with waves of texture and well placed instrumental licks and sections.
I love it when I hear something that has very clear influences and direction but still manages to be completely it’s own thing which is what St Anthony Mann has done here.
Phantom is one of eleven songs on St Anthony Manns most recent release ‘look again’. It sits in the middle of the record surrounded by other songs that are of equal quality and have the same attention to detail that phantom has. Definitely perfect for those early autumn morning walks and those evening campfires with friends. One of the things that makes this project so good is that it can be used to set the tone of your conversation or become the conversation piece itself. Definitely well worth checking out the full album and adding it to your cozy autumnal playlists.
