Juan Lopez is the mastermind behind the alias ‘sofa city sweetheart’. I was instantly pulled into his world with the simple plucked guitar melody at the start of it wasn’t you and then captured fully by the brilliant vocals that sound so so cool and (I think) doubled up. As a mellotron came in I’m instantly reminded of the Beatles and could easily see sgt peppers lonely hearts club band being one of his influences without a doubt.

This modern heavily influenced 60’s sound gives the welcome feeling of nostalgia whilst still sounding and feeling like a fresh take on a classic style. It’s so great to hear the shuffle beat behind the voice and other instruments as it adds a hint of spaghetti western to the already brilliantly unique sound. I love it when people really put themselves into their music which is something Juan has done here. If I heard any of his songs out in the wild then I would instantly know it was him. This kind of musical identifier is incredibly difficult to achieve. To put yourself completely into your music to the point that your influences as well as your personality shines through is very very difficult.

The musical melody throughout the song remains catchy as well allowing me to at least hum along after the first listen and eventually sing along to after three or four plays.

For fans of any sixties music looking for a modern artist that will release music in the old style with modern sensibilities, sofa city sweetheart is the artist for you. Check out his Christmas album as well for some brilliant takes on some classic songs. Despite being released four years ago he still maintains the same brilliant style in his music
