There’s nothing I love more than a gritty indie rock song with some killer female vocals on it and that is exactly what this is. They self describe themselves as new wave pop punk which actually feels extremely accurate. The influences of fall out boy and Paramore are also notable in their music as the drums dance underneath the crunchy guitars. It instantly gave me Paramore riot vibes.
There’s a lot of development throughout the song. We go from loud guitars and double timed drums down to stripped back with the voice pushing through. Longwinded have really done this well as it doesn’t feel repetitive or gimmicky in anyway.
They clearly rehearse well and often as the song is more complex than I had initially realised with these different sections as well as the instrumental parts. Each member shines through in this song with the drums blasting out so many different rhythms and parts constantly interchanging the feel of the song with half time and double time beats. The guitarist has more licks up his sleeve than a puppy in a room of 100 tennis balls and Catherine’s voice is a shining consistent throughout the song allowing the music to constantly chop and change underneath her voice whilst she guides the song through.
Despite being quite a busy song it’s just done so so well and kept me hooked from the start to the finish. These are clearly three extremely talented musicians who know their ability as well as their instruments so so well. I also listened to their other two songs currently on their Spotify and was equally impressed. It’s so hard to believe they’re only at around 100 monthly listeners with music this complex and unique yet perfectly accessible to the average music fan.
I implore anyone with a musical ear and a penchant for loud guitars and smashing drums to get over to their Spotify and check out this amazing collection of songs. I honestly can’t wait to hear more!
