Guitars guitars guitars!
I love how the intro instantly sets the tone with a gritty yet easy guitar riff. They’re not here to punch you In the face with noise but are definitely getting your attention. They have such a confident air about how well they control the mood and the tone of the song from the get go.
The strong Brit pop vibe of early oasis with a dialled back distortion is perfect for those who are fans of their music but also want to be able to set the mood with a more subtle air.
The vocals are so clean, adding a small amount of grit in the final chorus with shouts of the song title Ramona. Very very well crafted song that’s so well in the pocket any music connoisseur can appreciate the togetherness of howling hawk and how well they play off each other’s parts all the way through the song. From the syncopated stabs before the chorus all the way to the guitar licks these guys are definitely a very well rehearsed and thought out unit.
The bands claim that ‘R kid looms over the band’ is one of the better ways I’ve ever heard a band describe themselves as they truly embody early northern music despite they’re groups international and varied heritage.
Having read their influences and the goal they set for their song to sound like a ‘b side from 95’ I think they’ve not only achieved this beautifully but rather hit the metaphorical nail on the head. With the vision for the band and the music being so specific as well as the arrangement you can just tell these guys are a solid group that certainly gel well together.
This debut release of there’s has left me somewhat hungry for more, I firmly believe people will be talking about howling hawk within a couple of years if they continue with this quality of music. Their vision is strong and so is their music, definitely worth adding to your playlists and checking out as soon as possible.
